Nuestra Senora de la Merced
Josep Pichot’s wife inherited a house in Figueres, and he convinced Salvador Dali Cusi to try for the town notary’s position, which he obtained in 1900. Dali Cusi promptly married his fiancee, Felipa Domenech Ferres, the daughter of a Barcelona haberdashery importer. Her mother was a gifted artisan.
The future parents of Salvador Dali were married on December 29, 1900, at the church of Nuestra Senora de la Merced, Barcelona’s patron saint.
The baroque church was originally a gothic construction dating to the 13th century. The painting above, from 1920, is “Portrait of the Artist’s Mother, Dofia Felipa Dome Domenech De, Dali”.
