Dali Planet #117:
The Palazzo delle Prigioni
At the Palazzo delle Prigioni in Venice in 1954, during a large retrospective of his work that also travelled to Rome and Milan, Dali painted “The Lion of Venice”, and it was sold accompanied by a photograph of him standing in the middle of the canvas.
The lion’s wing was cut from the canvas for the shot, then stitched back in place. Also in the show were 102 watercolours illustrating Dante’s “Divine Comedy” (example above right).
